Everyone that starts a new site, can't wait for the time to come when they can start showing it to their friends and the general public. Before that, there are a couple of things you should do to prepare and make your site more presentable.

Content
Make sure when people first start coming to your forum, that they have something to come for. If you are running a forum, try to provide as much content as possible...and in as many topics as possible...so visitors get a good first impression. Talking to other people over the years, one of the biggest pet peeves is visiting a new site with only a couple of posts to read. Chances are, these people will not be return visitors.

Variety
This kind of goes hand in hand with content. Most forums are geared towards a specific cause, theme, hobbie or interest. However, to attract more visitors and peek their interest, try to provide some general areas as well. A few "Off Topic" sections will do wonders for the atmosphere and general feel of your site. Let's face it...there's only so much people can post about a specific topic of interest. By providing a general discussion area, people are more apt to participate, which will result in more activity and better communication for your members.

Options
Everyone loves to make their own choices. As a result, to keep members coming back, present them with different options to make their stay more enjoyable. There are tons of simple things you can do to accomplish this. For example...something as simple as adding a few games, puzzles, contests, group discussion, etc will allow them something to do other than just post. Even a choice in board appearance (skin/themes) allows them the ability to change the regular run of the mill site into one they will enjoy. It may sound simple, but believe me..it works wonders.

Feedback
Not all people like to hear negative remarks about their site that they worked so hard on. But these remarks can only make it that much better. Provide your members a place to voice their opinions, be it a feedback section, polls or whatever other method you can come up with. After doing so, there are two more things that must be done. You must encourage everyone to voice their opinion whither it be negative or positive, and you must be prepared to really listen to them and act upon improving things they feel should be improved. After all...it really is them that keep the site going...not us.

Welcomes
In my honest opinion, I think this should be a given with any forum. Members should have a place where they can introduce themselves, as well as a place where other members can welcome them to your site. That's the trick. By saying "welcome" or "good day" to new members makes them feel wanted and special. They feel like they are already a part of "The Group", and that you really do care that they are here.

These are just a few things I feel should be considered and added to a site prior to making it available for public viewing. Speaking from experience, if a site lacks considerably in these basic and simple things, I tend to lose interest extremely fast.
In conclusion, give your members a site they want to participate in. One that's interesting and will keep them coming back. Like the old cliche goes...half empty or half full. I can almost guarantee your members will view it as half empty and not worth the time or effort. That is something you want to avoid. By having some of the previous areas covered before opening, you have already taken a step in the right direction to making your site more appealing, pleasant, and therefore successful.

Forum Etiquette

Forum Etiquette is very important if you want to have a successful site. Here are a few rules of thumb to use on your own forum, that you should be making your members aware of.

Avoid Confrontations in Open Forum:
If one of your members has a problem with another member or post, encourage them not to discuss it in public. Problems of this nature can escalate if discussed in a fashion where the general viewing public can see it. Instead, urge them to use the "Report to moderator" function, or send a pm to one of the staff describing their concerns. No one likes to be called out in public. It is only human nature to defend ourselves, even if it will cause more unnecessary conflict.

Large Images:
Posting large images can really throw the overall flow of a forum out the window. They can stretch the forum out of proportion. Images larger than 400x400 (the normal maximum for forums) should be posted using a thumbnail of the actual image. As an administrator, you should make your members aware of how to post these smaller versions of the original image. Most image hosting services will provide you with an image link for thumbnails for this reason.

Obscene Language:
Although this is a given, it still requires mentioning. No one enjoys entering a site and finding obscene posts. If your forum comes with a word filter, I strongly advise using it. This will block the obscene words until you get a chance to remove or change the post that contains them. Encourage your members to use conduct themselves in a courteous and professional manner. Your overall site will reflect those actions.

Banning As a Last Resort:
If you encounter a troublesome member, don't get trigger happy with the banning feature. Banning someone in the heat of a dispute will only cause that member to retaliate with even more destructive actions. Instead, try talking to them in hopes of resolving the dispute, or if needed, place them in a restrictive group until they abide by the overall rules and regulations you have set for the site. In most cases, they will either calm down and conduct themselves differently to gain back those privileges that have been taken away, or they will give up and leave peacefully.

Create a pleasing atmosphere:
As a site administrator, it is your job to do what ever you must do to provide your members with a pleasing and enjoyable atmosphere. This is not always an easy assignment. However, it is one that you must complete in order to make your site successful and keep people wanting to come back. After all...without them, you have no site. This includes, but is not limited to, avoiding confrontations, having and showing respect for everyone, listening to the opinions and concern of members, and interacting with them in such a way that they do not feel they are below you because you are an administrator and they are only "members". They make your site, and you owe them that much!!!

These are just a few tips to help you on your way to having a successful and enjoyable site for everyone that visits. I will be adding to this list as time goes on, so check back later for more...

Hey guys. I'd like to take some time to introduce my brand new MyBB theme/design site by the name MyPureBB. I have been creating a few themes recently (including some custom work for svizy) and so decided it was time to create a kind of showcase site. Anyway, I'm now hoping it will be so much more than just a showcase of my work and I hope others will post some of their work and we'll get a nice community of themers sharing their knowledge.

I've literally just opened the site, but we already have a set of custom mybb profile templates and a few skins.

http://www.mypurebb.com

PS: the theme currently in use is available for download on the site ;D Why not register and see?
